Totterdown Street News Update

Thank you to all the residents and wider community who got involved with the community consultation for Totterdown Street. We wanted to update you on the outcomes of the consultation and the next steps for Totterdown Street.

The Consultation Process and Feedback

Wandsworth Council undertook a series of engagement activities between 22nd May- 25th June 2023 for residents, businesses, and organisations to again feedback on the long-term proposals to improve Totterdown Street.

People were invited to participate in a number of engagement events, including:

  • An online survey via Common Place
  • Two in-person drop-in sessions for the local community, held at Tooting Market
  • Two virtual meetings for key stakeholders

Two design proposals for Totterdown Street were shared with the community and were asked to provide feedback. An overview of the feedback can be seen below:

In response to the consultation feedback, a hybrid, preferred option has been developed to combine the elements of Option 1 and Option 2 that people liked the most as well as taking into consideration highways requirements for the street.

After the consultation the Council evaluated the feedback and created a plan for a trial scheme.

Trial Scheme

The trial scheme aims to show how Totterdown Street can be transformed. The design for the trial scheme will test how some of the key elements such as market stalls and the time-controlled spill out area for Tooting Market will work.

The trial scheme will also provide planters along the street to increase greenery and seating within the spill out area.

After the trial period the local community will be asked for their feedback on the scheme which will inform the long-term plan for Totterdown Street.

If the 12-month trial is successful Wandsworth Council will look to make the scheme into a permanent one for Totterdown Street. The information below is an example of what it could look like based on the consultation feedback. This masterplan may evolve over time to account for any further feedback gained from the trial period.

Long-Term Plan for Totterdown Street

The long-term plan for Totterdown Street has been developed based on the original two options, after feedback from consultation and a more defined understanding of the highway’s requirements for the street.

As a result of this the long-term plan includes rain gardens and trees, market stall pitches, a time-controlled plaza in front of Tooting Market with swing gates to close the road to vehicles and seating in the plaza area.

The street will be repaved and there is potential to create a mural on the façade of TK Maxx, subject to permissions.

The long-term plan may be amended based on feedback from the trial period.

Have your say and attend our event!

Thank you to all those who have been giving us their thoughts about Totterdown Street and the proposed changes to this area for the community. If you haven’t done so already, please check out the design ideas and tell us what you thinkbefore the 25th of June.

There will also be public engagement events in Tooting Market on 12 June and 15 June from 4-7pm, where we will be asking residents and businesses what they think about the ideas and if they have any other thoughts about what can happen in this public space.
